Wittswood is a family business and is currently run by David and his daughter Sophie as co-directors. David started his working life in 1973 as an apprentice for British Rail Engineering, this involved a year in a purpose built training school in Swindon. The apprenticeship lasted 4 years. After working a further 4 years for the Railway Works, David left to work as a cabinet maker primarily producing and fitting furniture for Lloyds Bank. After a couple of years David set up on his own working on various joinery projects for commercial clients over the next 10 years. In 1994 this evolved into Wittswood, initially manufacturing carpet thresholds using one machine in David's garage and was run by David and his wife Hillie (Hillie has now retired from the business).
David's eldest daughter Hannah joined the business in 2001 after university, leaving the business in 2015 to start a family and now works in a school. By this time Wittswood had moved its focus to flooring and door production, making handmade doors and occasional items of furniture. In 2009 David's youngest daughter Sophie joined the family business after getting a law degree at university and was in need of a summer job. Sophie like her dad found she enjoyed making things and is now competent in all wood working equipment and machinery and today specialises in making bespoke doors. David continues to produce handmade pieces of furniture, doors, gates and any other bespoke joinery which may be required.
