7 Fresh Ways to Spruce Up Your Gates, Gardens and Everything in Between
Do you have an old wooden door in hour house that you are tired of looking at? Don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a new door but would still like to repurpose your old door or gate? We have you covered! Here at Wittswood we care about you. Not just as a one-time customer but we also like to help wherever we can. We have curated a list of ways in which you can spruce up your old gates and doors.
1. Climbing Plants
It is possible that your yard has been feeling a little neglected all winter. But now that spring is on its way, your yard could do with a little bit more pizazz. The best way to add a splash of color to your yard is by adding flowering wines to any gate or even an outdoor door!
2. Contrast
If you are a fan of a bit bolder look, then contrast the material of your gate with that of your fence! Pair a wooden gate with a wrought iron fence or vice versa. If you’re a fan of a more subtle look then just use vertical wooden posts for your fence and horizontal ones for your gate.
Another way to spruce up a gate or an outdoor door is to stain the gate a different color than before. This will instantly lift the look of your yard or your garden. For example, if you have a small garden and would like to create the illusion of space, just paint your wooden gate a bright color. This will immediately draw everyone’s eye to your “new” gate!
3. Repurpose your old door
We understand that this might be a slightly larger project to undertake but we guarantee you that you’ll love the results! If you have small sized gate in your garden or a backyard, you can repurpose it as a child-proof door inside your house! You can stain it or paint it any color you want to match the interior aesthetic of your home.
Barn doors typically sliding ones, make for huge space savers even inside the house. If you have an area in the house that is already cramped up, just think about installing a barn door there. This will not only free up space in your house, but also add to the aesthetic value of your home.
4. Birdhouses and Planter Boxes
Birdhouses and planter boxes aren’t just whimsical in nature, they also add a splotch of color to your garden or backyard. A few simple cedar planter boxes filled with flowers can really transform any boring old fence or gate. Add a few brightly colored birdhouses next to it, and you’ll give your garden a much more homely touch.
Don’t worry if you don’t want to invest in wooden planter boxes. You can just paint a few old cans in bright colors and fasten them to your fence or gate!

5. DIY Trellis Plants
Trellis plants look pretty as a painting don’t, they? There’s something so soothing about a picket fence and wooden door surrounded by bushes and trellis. Propping up a trellis against your fence is a great way to encourage a climbing vine to grow all over your wooden gate. You don’t need to spend a fortune buying a trellis, you can simply repurpose an old crib trail.
6. Old Windows and Shutters
If you see old windows or shutters at a garage sale or have some lying around from your last remodeling project, just scoop them up and add them to your backyard! They make for beautiful and antique fence or gate decoration.
7. Liven up your deck or patio
It is simple to add a bit of life and color to your deck or patio. If your garden or backyard are as they should be, but it still feels likes something is missing? The best thing to do is to liven up your deck or patio. Throw some colorful cushions on your outdoor furniture, add a rug to your patio, or simply hang up some string lights to add an extra bit of sparkle!
